Machinery Guarding Safety Audits

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 place duties on people and companies, who own, operate or have control over work equipment. PUWER also places responsibilities on businesses and organisations whose employees use work equipment.  Machine Guarding Audit

As part of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) requirements, we can provide machinery guarding audits and risk assessments in line with specific guarding standards.

SMS Europe are members of the British Standards Institute and have access to all current British Standards for guarding so can evaluate the guarding of your machinery against the following standards for example:

  • BS EN 953:1997+A1:2009 Safety of machinery. Guards. General requirements for the design and construction of fixed and movable guards

What does the law say on guarding?

Specifically the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 2008 say that employers should:

  •  Take effective measures to prevent access to the dangerous parts of machinery. Normally, this would be by fixed guarding.  Where routine access is needed, interlocked guards  may be needed to stop the movement of dangerous parts before a person can reach the danger zone(sometimes these types of guard will also have guard locking). Where this is not possible – such as with the spindle of a drill – it must be protected as far as possible and a safe system of work used. These protective measures should follow the hierarchy laid down in PUWER regulation 11(2) and the PUWER Approved Code of Practice and guidance

If you would like to know if all your machinery is properly guarded and meeting the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, you may decide to have a machinery guarding audit.  A Machinery Guarding Audit conducted by one our Health and Safety Consultants will help identify the Guarding Safety issues within your organisation and can act as a starting point for developing your machinery safety issues.  Audits can be carried out on a stand-alone basis or can be part of a tailored Health and Safety/Competent person service.
